You Want Some Cheese With That Whine?

Marcelo started school 3 weeks ago. He only has to make the almost 2 hour trek to school once a week, every other week. Not bad at all, right? Except for the fact that today is the 2nd Monday he’s been gone from 7am to 11pm, and the 2nd Monday that Diego has decided to throw up all over the house. It’s not out of the ordinary for Diego to vomit. His super sensitive gag reflex coupled with his food allergies make him do it roughly once every couple of months. But he always knows it’s coming and makes it to the bathroom so there is virtually no clean up involved. EXCEPT for two Mondays ago and this evening. Two weeks ago he had to come home early because he threw up at school. Then he spent the rest of the day throwing up every time he tried to eat anything. In his blanket, on the floor, in his hands. Super fun stuff. That night when Marcelo came home from school, I said, “Well, if I made it through tonight, I can make it through the rest of the Mondays you’re gone.” Then tonight, once again, out of nowhere Diego threw up all over himself and the floor. And then he threw up again all over the floor. And then again. And then I asked him to please make his way to the bathroom, and he threw up all over the bathroom door and floor. Do you know how awesome this is to clean up when you are 10.5 weeks pregnant? AWESOME. I was dry heaving and trying not to cry from frustration at the same time. OF ALL THE NIGHTS. A friend of mine was supposed to be stopping by and when I told her what was going on, she asked if it would be too hectic for her to still come. (We haven’t seen each other in over a year and I really wanted to see her.) I said, “Well, I still have to clean the puke off the door, give the other two kids a bath, give everyone dinner, hope Diego doesn’t barf anymore, and get them all to bed.” So yeah, might be a little hectic.

Now it’s 8pm and the kids, who are usually asleep by now, are still talking and laughing in their room. PLEASE GO TO SLEEP. I love them very much, but I am ready to be off duty tonight.

Perhaps I am just being a cranky grump. But goodness gracious I hate puke.

More on the pregnancy news when I am in better spirits. For now I will go eat whatever my heart desires and watch chick TV and not fold laundry or do anything productive. I think I deserve that tonight, don’t you? The answer is yes.

Resolutions

Happy New Year! 2011 was a great year for my little family. Would you like a recap of the super fun and exciting stuff that happened? Sure thing.

-We went on a cruise to the Bahamas, Grand Cayman, and Cancun
-Celo entered Primary as a Sunbeam
-Diego turned 5
-We bought and remodeled a house
-Eliana turned 1
-Eliana started walking
-We paid off my van
-Celo turned 4
-Diego started kindergarten
-Diego started reading
-Eliana started talking
-Celo remained completely obsessed with all things construction related all year long
-Photography kept me very busy
-My brother got married
-Marcelo turned 31
-Marcelo signed up for school (he starts next week!)

One sad thing that happened this year is that I lost my grandpa. His birthday was December 31st, so this New Year’s Eve I wasn’t feeling very festive. I didn’t dance at our family party at all. The night was bittersweet. So many great things happened in 2011, but I couldn’t shake the sadness of the loss of my sweet grandpa.

On New Year’s Eve Marcelo’s cousin took this picture of us. (Just ignore my claw on Marcelo’s shoulder.)

family

We went to my uncle’s house and got together with tons of family and some friends. We had a tasty dinner and then my uncle handed out some sheets that had a bunch of categories of things to be grateful for. We had to put 10 things in each category. I really liked taking that time to reflect on the blessings in my life. We also had to write 10 resolutions for the new year. Marcelo and I took some time the next day to write our goals for the new year, just like we do every year. This year we had 20 things on our list. I’ll share a few here in a second. At midnight we ate our 12 grapes (and made 12 wishes for the new year) and drank our sparkling cider. My uncle gave a toast and talked about gratitude, and then Marcelo’s cousin offered a prayer as a start to our new year. Everything combined was really a great way to celebrate a new beginning.

Here are the only 2 pictures I took on New Year’s Eve:

ilysparklers

My cousin and her friends were playing around with sparklers and I was like, “Oh Oh!! Let me take a picture of you writing something!” We didn’t think about writing 2012 until they were on their last few sparklers, so we only got one shot and we blew it. Both of the “2’s” forgot that they should be writing the 2 backwards. Whoops. At least we kind of have a pic to use in 2018.

2012sparklers

Alright, so on to the resolutions. Here are just a few:
-FHE every week. Towards the end of last year we let this one fall by the wayside a bit. We started letting lots of things count as Family Night and made it less formal, so we’re  ready to get back to the more structured way we were doing it before.
-Nightly scripture reading with the kids. We’ve been doing this about 3 times a week, but would like to make sure we do it every night.
-Nightly scripture reading as a couple. This is also one we’ve been doing for awhile, but not nightly.
-Go to the Temple once a quarter. With 3 kids it’s really hard to get to the temple. Just the drive is almost 3 hours round trip. Add in another 2 hours there and you’re asking someone to watch your kids for at least 5 hours! Our awesome friends kept our kids the other night so we could go, and as grateful as we were, we stressed many times throughout the night about whether or not they were behaving and how difficult Eliana was being. Even though we couldn’t get that worry out of our minds, it was still so so great to be at the Temple together. We’ve each gone once in the last year, but we hadn’t gone as a couple in two years!! When we came home we decided there’s no reason we can’t trade off with friends, or ask our parents to watch our kids so we can go once every 4 months. That’s a doable goal, I think.
-Date nights with the kids every week. Our boys are in desperate need of some one on one time. So once a week we’re going to write it in our schedule for one of us to take one of the boys out for an hour to do something fun. We’ll rotate so they both get turns to have a Daddy date and a Mommy date. I’m really looking forward to this.
-15 minutes of teaching Spanish daily. I can’t even express to you how much it weighs on me that I haven’t really taught my kids Spanish. Whenever I think about it, I feel like there is a lead weight sitting on my heart. I know they are going to grow up and ask my why the heck I didn’t teach them and that makes me feel awful. It’s just so hard for me to turn on the Spanish switch in my brain when English comes so much easier. The thought of teaching my kids a second language is just so overwhelming to me!! I don’t even know where to start. Diego understands about 60% of what my mom says to him, but Celo understands about 1%. Whenever I try to teach him stuff he gets frustrated and wants me to stop. I always think, “He’s already 4! It’s going to be so hard for him to pick it up!” But how much harder is it going to be when he’s trying to learn it at 14? Or at 24? Much harder. So I finally decided that this is the year that I will be disciplined and JUST DO IT. I’ve been feeling bad about this for years and I decided I don’t want to feel that way forever, so why not make the change now? Telling myself to just start with 15 minutes a day of speaking Spanish doesn’t seem impossible. Hopefully that will slowly grow to an hour a day, but we’ll see how it goes.
-Take on no more than 2 shoots a month and raise my prices. I love love love photography. I love walking into people’s homes and seeing the pictures I took on display. I love having an artistic outlet. I love being able to chip in financially. But I do not love feeling like the rest of my life (my kids, my husband, and the state of my house) has to take a backseat so I can spend hours sitting at the computer editing. I have spent a lot of time learning this art and developing a style. I have also spent a lot of time worrying that not enough people like my style and that I have to keep my prices lower than everyone else or I will lose a loooooot of clients. But I’m not worried anymore. I have to do what is best for my family! I announced on my photography page on facebook (http://facebook.com/nathalyblalockphotography) that I am taking limited shoots this year and told a few people my new prices and within 24 hours of making that announcement, I booked March, April, and November! I already have this month booked, too. It is definitely a weight off to know that I’ll still be able to do what I love, without sacrificing time with my family. It may sound cheesy, but I am constantly amazed that Heavenly Father continues to open these doors for me. It makes me feel like I am on the right path.

We have a ton of other goals that I won’t write here. Some are financial, some personal, some practical (like make a leaf for our dining table so we can finally sit more than 4 people. This WILL happen this year.). I feel very blessed to have such a great guy by my side to help me reach these goals. I’m going to stop writing now because I’ve got this overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my family and if I keep writing, there is sure to be a whole lot of mush. ;)

Christmas 2011

It’s Christmas Day and I’m already blogging Christmas! I figured I’d take advantage of Eliana’s nap and the boys being entertained by their new stuff. Otherwise I probably wouldn’t sit down to document this Christmas until sometime next summer.

I didn’t even come close to doing Christmas Cards this year. Next year that will be my goal. So this is what I made on Christmas Adam (the eve of Christmas Eve):

christmascard2011

Eliana is riding a reindeer. The kids put antlers on her rocking horse. Then they busted out little jars of sprinkles and used them as maracas. They were cracking up.

christmasPJS2eweb

On Christmas Eve we started at Grandma and Grandpa’s house and sang Happy Birthday to Jesus. (Grandma’s annual tradition.)

christmas05christmas06

 christmas07

Then we went inside and opened the presents that all the cousins got for each other. The boys got car stuff, a big cardboard space shuttle, and Eliana got a guitar. Lots of fun to be had!

christmas01christmas03christmas02

Then Grandpa and Grandma brought out the gifts they bought for the kids. I didn’t take pictures of that because I was too busy getting video of the echoes of joy that were ringing throughout the living room. “YAY!!!! I GOT MY VERY OWN CAMERA!!! (Diego) WHAT??? A GRATER?? THAT’S WHAT I WANTED!! (Celo)” And the cutest dollhouse ever for Eliana. The kids were in heaven.

christmas04

Then we got on our “Christmas Best” and headed over to see my side of the family.

The kids only opened one present each from Tata and Tato: a glow in the dark marble thing for Diego, a remote control dump truck for Celo, and a baby doll for Eliana. More big smiles.

Usually the present opening doesn’t even begin until midnight at my extended family get togethers, but Celo was begging us to take him home, so we opened their gifts a tad early and left at 11:20. Because of how late it was, the boys crawled straight into bed when we got home and left the Santa cookie prep up to us. We gave them one last reminder that no presents would be opened before 7am, and prayed that they’d be tired enough to sleep in on Christmas morning.

At 6:15AM, Diego ran into our room and said, “GET UP GET UP GET UP! PRESENTS!!!” We whispered, “Merry Christmas to you, too. Go back to bed. Come back and get us at 7.” Are we horrible parents? At 7:00 on the dot, Diego bounced back into our room and said, “IT’S SEVEN!! LET’S GO!” Celo was exhausted but stumbled out of bed and found his energy when he saw all the presents. We decided not to wake up Eliana quite yet. Here are the boys opening their first gift.

christmas15

Each present was received with, “Yay! That’s what I wanted!” After they finished opening their presents, Eliana woke up and opened hers. She remembered the drill from the night before right away and tore into her loot.

christmas16

Here is Diego with his gifts from Santa: “Dancing Lights (by far his favorite), a “video game” (Leapster 2), and a game for the Leapster.

christmas18

Celo’s Santa presents: Tractor Legos, a digger that he can actually sit on and use, and a little construction site (his favorite).

christmas17

Eliana spotted the remaining cookie Santa left behind and helped herself to it. Breakfast of champions.

christmas19

I tried to get a picture of her with her presents but she was being a clown and wouldn’t look at the camera. She just threw her head back and did a fake laugh. Pretty hilarious. Anyway, Santa went way easy on her because 1) she has a million relatives who buy her gifts, and 2) she’s 18 months old. So she got 3 books, a movie, hairbows, and a little baby doll.

christmas20

Marcelo and I did not really exchange gifts. Well, I got him a new wallet and hat from the kids and he got me a new blanket for baby photoshoots from the kids. But that was it because….well, because we bought a house this year, so isn’t that present enough? I think so. I felt sooo happy and sooo grateful spending our first Christmas in our new house.

What’s this?? Diego sitting quietly and entertaining himself? Noooo. Unheard of. Definitely worth Santa’s midnight Black Friday trip.

christmas21

Eliana, who never took a bottle in her life, kept trying to drink from her new baby’s bottle.

christmas22

She was very upset that I was taking pictures of her and wouldn’t open her eyes. Stinker.

christmas23

We’ve had a great morning together just relaxing and playing with the new toys. The boys got some fun card games in their stockings, so we tried those out and ate some of their bubble gum and tried to learn how to blow bubbles. (Unsuccessful and quite frustrating for some.) With the whirlwind of the last couple weeks still hanging over me, it has been blissful just being home today and enjoying each other’s company with no need to rush around. Yes, we skipped church, shame on us, but Marcelo and I both decided that we just needed some quiet time together. He’s with the boys playing with tractors right now and they couldn’t be happier. Later we’re heading to Marcelo’s aunt’s house for a big family lunch, and then after that we’ll go to my parents’ house for dinner and to exchange a few more presents.

December started out crazy but we’ve been able to squeeze in some time to go look at lights, watch Celo’s preschool Christmas program, and just enjoy the Christmas season. The kids really seemed to understand the meaning of Christmas much better this year than ever before, which made it extra special. We talked a lot about the nativity and read lots of books. The boys wrapped up some old toys and Diego put them out by the door with a sign that said, “Toys for kids who don’t have any presents.” Very sweet.

18 Months

Eliana is 18 months old! This post is just a list of things I want to remember about my daughter at 18 months.

At 18 months she:

Has a huge vocabulary! She is by far my biggest talker. She tries to imitate pretty much anything we say. I’ll say “Eliana can you say computer? And she’ll say “pooba”. What? That’s not close? Today she heard me tell Celo to put his backpack away and she started saying, “Ba Pa” for backpack. I’m writing out a list of how she says things (like I did for my boys) because my mom did this for us and I remember thinking that was so cool when I was little. So, the words Eliana uses regularly are: (writing it as she says it. If I write it normal it’s because she says it normal.)

No no no noooo
yaaaay
eat
pease – please
mommy
daddy
day-go – Diego
geh-go – Celo
nana – Eliana
juice
shoes
cah – car
puppy
bohd – bird
beh – bear
cat
uh-oh
ipps – oops
boo – book
wook – look

Mama – Grandma
Papa – Grandpa
go
baby
moh – more
appo - apple
mehmo – elmo
oush –ouch
bah – bath
bah – ball
dis – this
yeah
yeahss – yes
bubbosh – bubbles
ahs – eyes
nose
mow – mouth
peet – feet
beh – belly
cack – quack
tee – tweet
pee-y – pretty

That’s all I can think of.

At 18 months she:
Loves to climb things. She climbs chairs, the couch, the shelves in the pantry, the beds, her crib, and her favorite: all over her brothers. Celo finds it hilarious and doesn’t care if she’s squishing his face or being rough. Diego likes it a little less, but still lets her most of the time. When we’re reading books at bedtime, Diego listens attentively and Eliana climbs all over Celo while he cracks up. It’s kind of a nightly thing. When she climbs something, she usually just stays there and starts screeching because she’s afraid to get down.

Did I already mention she’s a huge screecher? She is. It’s loud. She screams, screeches, whines, and throws herself on the floor like a 2 year old. And she’s only 18 months old so I like to think of her as advanced in that way. An advanced tantrum throwing diva, haha. She is well aware of what is expected of her, though, and responds pretty well to “gentle correction” most of the time. If she’s screaming and whining because she wants me to give her some food (this is what her tantrums are about 98% of the time), I say, “No screaming.” or “Be nice.” And she immediately stops and rubs her little chest and says, “Peeeeeaaaase.” When she does other naughty things like hit her brothers (daily basis), I say, “Do you want to go to bed?” That’s time out for my 18 month old. When I threaten this, she immediately stops hitting and starts softly caressing her brother’s head, arm, or wherever she was hitting him. On an especially defiant day, she hits again and then I put her in her crib for a minute and walk away. She haaates this, so we don’t have hitting episodes for awhile after that.

We use “do you want to go to bed” for dinner too. My daughter is contending for the title of Pickiest Eater on the Planet. It. is. infuriating. Not gonna lie. Allllll day long she begs for food. “Peeeeaaase. Peeeeaaase. Eat! Eat! Eeeeat!” She does the sign for please and just looks at me with the face of a sad little beggar. So I offer food. Fruit, crackers, cheese, bread, raisins, chips, meats  ….she wants none of it. The only healthy thing she will eat consistently is yogurt. Everything else is a battle. Well, unless it’s candy or sweets. When she begs for food, she pretty much just wants me to giver her junk. Sometimes I give in because I think, “At least she’s eating something.” Even if it’s gummy snacks. Or cookies. Seriously, I cannot express enough how frustrating the situation is. I’ve never had such a picky eater! So at dinnertime, when I look back on what she ate all day, (some crackers, a handful of cereal, and a bag of gummy snacks) I beg her to eat her dinner so I feel like she got some nutrition. Sometimes she surprises me and is all about her peas or carrots or chicken. But other times, she wants none of it and that’s where the “do you want to go to bed” comes in. I try to give her a bite of broccoli and noodles and she shakes her head and closes her eyes. Then I say, “Do you want to go to bed?” and she shakes her head again and opens her mouth. Then, the little faker chews the bite of food and exclaims, “Mmmmmmmmm!” Like, “Oh, that’s so yummy” even though she clearly hates it. She’s just trying to not get sent to bed. Then I try to give her another bite and again she refuses. We go through the cycle over and over all through dinner. “Do you want to go to bed? No. Mmmmmmmm”.  I should record it.

She has such a funny laugh. Also something I should record. It just sounds like a teenager’s or something. It totally sounds like she’s trying to do an evil laugh. You know, like “Bwah ha ha ha haaa” but without the bwah at the beginning. Especially when she’s begging for the aforementioned treats and I finally give in. She just does the little evil laugh and says, “Yay!” and it becomes clear that I have been worked.

She is a ham. She loves to make everyone laugh. If she notices that the boys are doing something that is making us laugh, she joins in to try to make us laugh, too. And she looooves when her brothers laugh at things she does. She’ll put one of my shoes on or something that she thinks will be funny and then starts saying, “Mommy. Daddy. WOOK!”

She just loves attention period. In the store, she’ll be crying and screaming and then a stranger looks at her and she stops, smiles, and waves. Then she turns back to me and starts crying again.

She still has no girly toys. She plays with the boys’ cars and construction vehicles and says, “rrrroooooooooooom” as she moves them across the floor. She doesn’t really have a favorite kind of toy. She just likes to get into whatever they’re doing or whatever I’m doing. If I’m cooking, she’s at my feet with tupperware. If I’m cleaning my room, she’s at my feet pulling stuff out of my purse. The only thing I can think of that she really loves is books. She asks me to read to her all the time. She brings me a book and climbs into my lap and says, “Pease.” Sometimes I’ll be kneeling doing laundry or cleaning up or whatever and she’ll come sit in my lap while I’m trying to do other things and I’ll just keep doing what I’m doing which makes her slip off my lap. Then she’ll say “Ipps!” and get back onto my lap until I stop what I’m doing and read to her.

She loves music as much as Diego does. She loves to dance. Her dance moves are hilarious. For real, I have GOT to get it on video. I’m such a slacker mom. She sticks her tongue out of the side of her mouth when she dances. I have no idea why but it’s funny.

She loves to give kisses. A lot. She is always kissing up on one of us. Whether it’s the back of my knees when I’m standing at the stove, or the top of her brothers’ heads when they’re laying on the floor, she just randomly comes up to us and smooches us.

Whenever anyone in our family needs to go potty, she follows them into the bathroom and points at the potty and says, “Pee pees.” Sometimes she’ll tug at her diaper and act like she wants to sit on the potty. I let her one time and she sat there and tried for awhile until she got bored. It was shocking to me that she even cared or wanted to do that. Makes me hopeful that when the time comes she’ll be easy to potty train. And now I’ve just jinxed it.

When the neighborhood kids come knocking and I go to the door to tell them my boys can’t play or whatever, she stands next to me and tries to tell them for me. She nods her head at them and babbles like she’s saying something super important. “DIS! Dis WA da nee dee ba. Yai?” Makes me laugh.

She is our funny, crazy haired little princess and we love her! And now for a picture overload.

Giving Thanks

I would love to have the time/motivation to write a thankful post for the entire month of November, but it just ain’t gonna happen, so here’s one big thankful post on the day before Thanksgiving.

I’m thankful that we didn’t have to take Diego to the emergency room last night. He woke up at 11pm having an acute asthma attack, could barely breathe, and couldn’t talk. It was terrifying. We don’t know exactly what triggered it, since he hasn’t had asthmatic issues for a couple of years now, but the doc thinks it was caused by a viral bug he caught from his siblings. I’m thankful that our pediatrician answered his phone at 11pm and that my father-in-law came over to help Marcelo give Diego a blessing at 12:30. He’s doing a million times better today.

I’m thankful that we moved this year. I love our new home!!! I’m thankful that Marcelo knows how to do so much and was able to remodel the stuff that needed remodeling.

I’m thankful for how crazy busy I’ve been with photography. EIGHT shoots this month. In-sane. Marcelo only knows about 7 though, because I kept one a secret so I could surprise him with a gift for his bday. I don’t know if I can handle keeping it a secret for another week! I’m dying to tell him or at least show him the pictures since he’s my go-to critic/#1 fan. So since I can’t show him, I’ll show you. But SHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! One little peak:

Rydan04web

With my luck, he’ll pick this week to start checking our blog. Anyone else having a baby anytime soon?? I LOVE newborn shoots. Love them love them love them. Also, anyone want to trade knitting skills for a photoshoot? Just throwing it out there.

I’m thankful for my 3 beautiful kids. They are the greatest gift in my life. Besides my camera. Just kidding. They make me nuts, make me proud, make me want to freeze time, and make me feel fulfilled and happy. I love my little turkeys. I tried to take them out to get a Christmas card picture, but it was a total failure. I should have known not to attempt this immediately after Eliana’s nap. Yes, her dress is too small. This was a spur of the moment shoot and I just grabbed the first red dress I found.

873web877web

I’m thankful for my husband. It may sound mushy, but I’m going to say it anyway: he’s my best friend, my loyal partner in everything, a devoted “hands on” dad, a hard worker, an “out of the box” thinker, and just an incredibly kind human being. I feel so blessed to have him in my corner and can think of no other way to put it than to say he is our rock and our hero. And he’s coming home early today and I can’t wait to spend the next few days with him at home!

I’m thankful for my Heavenly Father and for the gospel of Jesus Christ. I’m thankful for being a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I’m thankful for the knowledge it gives me, the peace, and the joy it has brought to my life. A friend of mine recently wrote on facebook, “Do you ever wonder what the point of all this is?” I wanted to respond, “No. Because I know. And I can tell you if you want to know.” But I am not gutsy enough, I’m way too scared of pushing my beliefs on my friends, and I respect that others don’t believe the same things. BUT…for real…if you want to know my answer to that question, just ask. Or go HERE and read all the subtopics, too.

I’m thankful for GOOD HEALTH. Even if it is elusive in our house these days. We had approximately 4 days of good health and I wish I would have soaked them in before we got slammed again.

I’m thankful for technology. I would not be able to keep in contact with so many of my loved ones without it. And it would be a lot harder to pursue photography. AND, I wouldn’t get to watch my shows. So…..it’s pretty important.

I’m thankful for appliances that make my life easier.

I’m thankful for Clorox Wipes.

I’m thankful for all of our extended family, whether near or far. I feel bad a lot of times that I get busy with my own life and fail to keep in touch as much as I would like to. I have such great childhood memories with a lot of my extended family and I’m grateful that my kids are growing up with family so close so they can have those kinds of memories, too. For my family reading this, I love  you all and I think of you often. I’m sorry I don’t call nearly as much as I should. Join facebook PLEASE! haha. Such an easy way to stay in touch.

I’m thankful for Pepsi. It’s true. I am.

I’m thankful for all the people all over the world who share their knowledge on the internet so any question I could possibly have can be answered at any time of day in a matter of minutes. It’s amazing. My mom calls the internet her mom because she can ask it anything and it knows the answer. This is how I’ve learned so many things to make for my son with food allergies, how to make cute things, how to get pesky stains out, how to fix things, new editing or photography tricks, and so…much…more.

I’m thankful I made it this far before my kids started trying to yank me out of the computer chair. So that is all for now. :)

Lessons from Eliana

Oh Eliana. The things she teaches me. Last night she taught me that leaving my purse on the floor while I make dinner is a very very bad idea. Of course she would find the dark red lipstick. Of course.

She had been playing in my room for a little while, and I noticed she was behind the door, so I assumed she was playing with my jewelry like she normally does. I stayed in the kitchen happy as can be, boiling noodles and cooking up some ground turkey. And then she closed the door to my room all the way. I went to save her because she can’t reach the knob to open the door back up, and when I opened the door, I found a floor covered in dark red lipstick. And Eliana covered head to toe. I didn’t get a picture of the floor because Diego, my sweet sweet helper, cleaned it up before I got the camera. I just looked at him and said, “Diego, I need your help.” And he jumped at the chance to be my little hero. He grabbed those clorox wipes and went to town. But first I took these pictures of my door and wall:

010web

011web

When I opened the door and found her, I said, “ELI-ANA!” (That’s how it sounds when I’m scolding her.) I scooped her up and said, “No! You don’t play with mommy’s lipstick! No no no!” Then I put her back down and told her to stay put while I went to grab the cleaning wipes. I didn’t expect her to stay put, but she did! That’s why I know she totally knew she was in trouble. When I saw her just sitting there, I couldn’t resist taking some pictures. It was so sad and so cute.

006web

Look at that “I’m sorry” face! It breaks my heart and makes me want to smother her with kisses every time I look at it.

007web

After the pictures, I put her in the bath and quickly realized Johnson’s baby soap wasn’t going to cut it. I asked Diego to bring me some baby wipes, and he came in and immediately started helping without being asked to. I grabbed one arm and he grabbed another and we scrubbed and scrubbed. Eliana thought it was funny. Diego kept talking to her and saying, “Eliana!! You silly girl!! You don’t put makeup all over yourself, crazy girl!” It was adorable. I kept stopping to just kiss his forehead and thank him for being so sweet and helpful. Where was Celo, you ask? Playing with tractors and ignoring the entire situation. But he was the first to tell Marcelo all about it when he got home from work. My funny children. They make me nuts and melt my heart all at the same time.

Halloween 2011

This year, I wasn't as into the Halloween spirit as I have been every other year. My parents, who love Halloween, haven't been in a celebratory mood lately. It's only been a few months since my sweet grandpa passed away, so all the holidays this year are going to serve as a reminder that he is no longer with us. But I firmly believe that he wouldn't want life to stop because he's gone. Especially for my kids. So this year was all about the kids, and whatever we did, we did for them.

This year Diego was crazy about Halloween. Starting October 1st, he hounded me constantly about decorating our house. During the weekend that Celo was super sick, Diego went to Tata’s house, where she humored him and helped him make a ton of paper rats and bats. He came home and taped them all over the living room. And I JUST now realized that we just took them all down yesterday and I never got a picture! Sad smile Maybe I’ll ask him to put them back up for a pic.

A few days before Halloween, I put this wig on Eliana and laughed so hard I cried. She already looks pretty funny walking around with her long locks, but this looked hilarious. The funniest part was how much she liked wearing it.

Here we are at our annual family halloween party. My parents weren't going to do it this year, but Diego begged. Diego chose to be a skeleton, Celo wanted to be a ghost, and Eliana was a little witch. I was originally going to just wear a black shirt and black pants and cover myself with spiderweb and attach spiders to myself. I even made a headband with a HUGE spider on it. But when I started putting the outfit together about an hour before we had to leave, I realized the spiderweb was sticking to everything and it just wasn’t going to work. Luckily, my awesome friend Vanessa had let me borrow this black witch’s dress. I had also bought that hat for Eliana but she wouldn’t keep it on. Otherwise I would have been costume-less! But yeah, I was so not going for the mother-daughter witch thing. For the record, lol. Marcelo’s mummy costume looked more like the abominable snowman, but thanks to his sis for letting us borrow it! The boys let us spray their hair this night, but didn’t want to do it again for trick or treating. I don’t blame them. That stuff stinks!!

A friend made these bags with my kids’ names on them. They loved them! Diego wanted his skeleton costume to glow, so I printed a stencil off the computer and Marcelo painted it with glow in the dark paint. I think he did a great job! And Diego was thrilled.

While we were out trick or treating he kept saying, “I’m not scared. Mommy, do you think I’m scared? Because I’m not. I’m not afraid of anything. None of this is scaring me. Do you think I’m afraid from that man hanging from the tree? I’m not. Do you see that spooky skeleton? That’s not scary.” Since he said it all night long, I was pretty sure he was scared out of his mind and was trying to put on a brave face. Poor kid!

Celo chose a ghost costume, but didn’t want anything on his head. I already had a sheet with a hole in it, and he already had white pants and a white shirt, so it was a free costume (ok $2 in face paint). He was so cute on Halloween night. He walked around totally in character howling like a ghost. Only his howl sounded more like an owl. “Hoooo hooooo”. I was cracking up at my little ghost.

I’m not going to lie, though. The black circles around his eyes creep me out in this picture.

And then there was this girl. I had so much fun making this no sew tutu. Even if I had to make it twice. (Elasic is way better than the ribbon method, just fyi!) Then I bought this little hat and added some tulle and ribbon to it.

She was born to dance, this one. Just like Tata and just like Diego. As soon as I put the tutu on her, she just wanted to twirl around. Here she is dancing.

I tried to tease her hair to make it crazy, but it’s so silky smooth (thanks to Grandma!) that the tease wouldn’t hold. Also why this girl’s hair never tangles. Lucky girl. I wonder how long that will last.

Celo trying to be scary. I love the next three pictures. I’m sure I will one day look back on them and cry. Why do they have to grow up so fast??

Trick or treating with their cousins.

Lastly, Diego had to dress as a book character for a costume parade at school. We chose Clifford because we already had it. He also got an award that day! The Presidential award, which means he’s on the “Principal’s List for outstanding achievement in the classroom.” He got a free pizza dinner because of it. Too bad he can’t eat pizza! I’m going to ask if they’ll sub anything for him. We’re so proud of him!
